Jack Thorne's adaptation of Woyzeck opened at the Old Vic, with Star Wars actor John Boyega in the titular role.

The cast celebrated opening night at the after party with stars including Haydn Gwynne and Jade Anouka.

Boyega plays the tortured soldier in Buchner's play, which has been relocated to 1980s Berlin. Thorne gives more context to the events of the play, which was famously unfinished by German playwright.

In her review of the show for WhatsOnStage, Sarah Crompton said: "The play's descent into darkness is completely absorbing."

It is Boyega's return to the stage following his role in the new film Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The London-born actor had previously worked at the National Theatre and Tricycle Theatre and starred in the film Attack the Block.

Woyzeck runs at the Old Vic Theatre until 24 June.
