Sadly, I’m not able to attend the Edinburgh Festivals this year due to family commitments and logistical hurdles. While not dishing out the stars (there’ll be some lovely WOS critics doing that very soon!), it still felt vital to use WhatsOnStage’s channels to platform exciting work that those frequenting the Fringe may be interested in. So here’s eight days, 24 shows and some tentative recommendations.

See the full list of picks so far here.

Midnight at the Palace

Midnight at the Palace brings the spirit of San Francisco’s 70s drag trailblazers The Cockettes to the Gilded Balloon this August. The new musical promises radical joy, glitter and a good dose of chaos. Written by Rae Binstock with songs by Brandon James Gwinn and directed by Paul McGill, the show dives into rebellion, chosen family and all-out anarchy. Expect disco, defiance and a lot of sparkle.

Gilded Balloon Patter House, to 24 August

Circa: Wolf

Back into the world of circus once again! Australian company Circa have a long and special history in the UK, and this summer they’ll bring Wolf to the Fringe – and these shores – for the first time. Billed as “circus with fangs,” expect a feral and unflinchingly dazzling show from the best in the biz.

Underbelly Circus Hub, 1 to 23 August

Ways of Knowing

The Untapped Award is always a safe bet for anyone wanting to see some cutting-edge work from the theatre makers with exciting things to say and novel ways to say them. Award-winning performance duo Emergency Chorus, consisting of Clara Potter-Sweet and Ben Kulvichit, presents Ways of Knowing, a dance-theatre work that explores the impossibility of predicting the future. Through choreography, live sound design, and found text, the pair investigates the strange tools humans have relied on to foresee what’s to come. Is it too on the nose to say we expect good things from this one?

Underbelly Cowgate, to 24 August
