The show begins its tour this autumn
Casting has been revealed for the new production of Hugh Whitemore’s Breaking the Code, presented by Royal and Derngate, Northampton, Landmark Theatres and Oxford Playhouse in association with Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse and HOME.
The 1986 play explores the life of Alan Turing, focusing on his work as a mathematician and codebreaker and how attitudes towards his sexuality shaped his life. This revival will include new material from Neil Bartlett that reflects on Turing’s royal pardon in 2013 and his wider legacy in Britain, with direction by Royal and Derngate’s artistic director Jesse Jones as part of the Made in Northampton season.
Mark Edel-Hunt will play Alan Turing. The company includes Niall Costigan as Mick Ross, Joseph Edwards as Christopher Morcom and Sixth-Former, Peter Hamilton Dyer as Dillwyn Knox, Carla Harrison-Hodge as Pat Green, Susie Trayling as Sara Turing and Smith, and Joe Usher as Ron Miller and Nikos.
The creative team features Jonathan Fensom as set and costume designer, Johanna Town as lighting designer and Robin Colyer as sound designer and composer. Gerrard Martin is movement director, Hannah Miller is casting director and Gemma Boaden is voice and dialect coach.
Breaking the Code opens at Royal and Derngate with a press night on 16 September and runs until 27 September before visiting Barnstaple, Oxford, Peterborough, Liverpool and Manchester. The Made in Northampton season is sponsored by Michael Jones Jeweller.
