According to the ”Daily Mail” the theatre impresario is “moving forward” with plans to make a new version of Lionel Bart’s musical
Cameron Mackintosh is looking to make a new film version of Lionel Bart's musical Oliver!, according to the Daily Mail.
Mackintosh controls most of the stage rights to the show, and has produced several revivals of it in London and on tour, most recently a UK tour in 2011 starring Neil Morrissey, Brian Conley and Samantha Barks.
He is currently tracking down the owners of the film rights, according to Baz Bamigboye, which he said is a "complex web".
Rumours abound that Mackintosh is also looking to persuade Stephen Daldry to direct the new adaptation.
The original film version of the show was released in 1968 starring Ron Moody as Fagin, Mark Lester and Oliver, Shani Wallis and Nancy and Oliver Reed as Bill Sikes. It won five Academy Awards including Best Picture.
It seems like Mackintosh could be looking to achieve similar success to the box-office hit 2012 Les Misérables movie, which he co-produced.
