Rumours have surfaced that 1992 film The Bodyguard could join the long line of Hollywood hits set for the stage.

According to the Daily Mail, producer David Ian is currently negotiating the stage rights to the film, which starred Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner and spawned Houston’s worldwide number one hit “I Will Always Love You”. It is thought the intention is to create a musical utilising the songs from the film – which also included “I’m Every Woman”, “Run To You” and “I Have Nothing”.

The Bodyguard centres on the relationship between music superstar Rachel Marron (Houston) and her bodyguard Frank Farmer (Costner), a former Secret Service agent who is hired to protect her from a stalker. Despite receiving a distinctly mixed critical reception, it was a huge commercial success and “I Will Always Love You” became the biggest selling single ever by a female artist.

Ian is obviously hoping to replicate that success on stage, following in the footsteps of Sister Act, another 1992 hit film that recently made its way to the West End. But getting the rights could involve lengthy negotiations, and he’ll be keeping his fingers crossed that Costner (a producer of the film) and Houston don’t have a problem…
