Arlene Phillips will direct the world premiere of new British rock musical, 27 at the Cockpit Theatre later this year.

Written and co-directed by Sam Cassidy, 27 takes its name from the age a number of popular musicians – including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse – were when they died, and 'explores the fragility of life'.

The production features 13 original songs and a cast of 15 – casting is yet to be announced.

Widely known as a choreographer, Phillips' directing credits include Saturday Night Fever and Jesus Christ Superstar. Talking about the production, she said: "27 has a powerful and emotional message that evokes so many memories of not just Amy Winehouse but so many others who began with a prodigious talent that eventually destroys them.

"Casting this show won’t be easy because we need true actors who are able to get into the depth of the roles, and like Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sam writes music that is only possible for a few to sing, and of course, I want them to dance!"

27 runs at the Cockpit Theatre from 12 September 22 October 2016, with previews from 8 September.
