Dominic Cooke will become the new artistic director of the Almeida Theatre in 2026, succeeding Rupert Goold after his 12-year tenure.

Cooke brings with him a large background in stage and screen direction: his recent theatre credits include Mrs Warren’s Profession, Hello Dolly, Medea and Good in the West End, as well as The Normal Heart and Follies at the National Theatre. From 2007 to 2013, he served as artistic director of the Royal Court.

Cooke has also directed two feature films, The Courier and On Chesil Beach, and worked on the BBC’s The Hollow Crown series. Reflecting on his appointment, he said he was excited to return to artistic leadership at a venue he described as a “magical space,” adding that he was grateful to Goold and his team for leaving the Almeida in such strong shape.

Goold, who steps down alongside executive director Denise Wood, said: “Dominic is a wonderful appointment. His Royal Court was brimming with confidence and new voices and I am sure he will bring his many talents to bear on continuing the rich story of our great theatre.”
