Alicia Vikander and Andrew Lincoln will appear in a new version of Henrik Ibsen’s The Lady from the Sea at the Bridge Theatre this autumn, adapted and directed by Simon Stone.

Vikander will play Ellida, a woman reassessing her place in a marriage to a doctor, Edward, played by Lincoln. The play follows Ellida’s confrontation with a former lover and the life she might have led had she chosen differently. Originally written by Ibsen in 1888, The Lady from the Sea explores themes of choice, commitment and personal freedom.

Stone, who has previously reimagined works such as Yerma at the Young Vic and Phaedra at the National Theatre, said today: “I’m over the moon to have found a new London home in the beautiful Bridge Theatre. The space is exhilarating, versatile, incredibly intimate.”

“Alicia was born to play this role. She grew up watching Ibsen in his original language. His myths course through her veins. She’s totally mesmerising to watch inhabit a character. The truth emanates from her.”

Vikander said she was drawn to the project through her long-standing appreciation of Ibsen’s writing, adding: “His plays have always spoken to me on a deeply personal level, so it felt right that The Lady from the Sea should be my theatre debut.

“As a long admirer of Simon’s work and his unique vision, I can’t wait for him to bring this play to life.”

The production opens on 18 September 2025, with previews from 10 September. It will run for nine weeks until 8 November. Presented by London Theatre Company in collaboration with Wouter van Ransbeek, this marks Stone’s debut at the Bridge.

Lincoln concluded: “I’m thrilled to be joining the Bridge Theatre with The Lady from the Sea this autumn. Simon Stone’s Yerma with Billie Piper and the rest of the astonishing cast was one of the greatest plays I’ve seen in years and reminded me of why I became an actor.

“So to be able to be back on stage alongside Alicia Vikander, with Simon’s direction, writing and all-round brilliance was too irresistible an opportunity to miss.”

Priority booking will open at 10am today. Public booking opens on 13 May. Further casting and creative team members will be announced in due course.
