Dates for Audra McDonald's West End debut confirmed

The musical ”Lady Day…” was postponed after McDonald announced she was pregnant

Multi award-winning actress Audra McDonald will make her West End debut in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill this June.

Originally scheduled for June 2016, the musical was postponed in May when McDonald announced she was expecting a child. She gave birth to her daughter, Sally, in October.

She will bring the show about jazz singer Billie Holiday to London from New York, where she starred as Holiday at the Circle in the Square Theatre in 2014.

The musical features several of Holiday's classic songs such as "God Bless the Child", "What a Little Moonlight Can Do," "Strange Fruit" and "Taint Nobody's Biz-ness". It follows the story of her life as she rose to fame in the '30s and '40s, but passed away aged 44.

McDonald has won six a record six Tony Awards, including Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play for Lady Day…. Last September, she was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama.

Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill runs at Wyndham's Theatre, London from 27 June to 9 September, with previews from 17 June.
