Philip Quast is hotly tipped to star in Trevor Nunn's revival of South Pacific at the National this winter. Quast, seen most recently in the West End in the RSC's The Secret Garden, won the 1998 Best Actor in a Musical Olivier for his role in The Fix at the Donmar Warehouse. In the new production of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein island musical, based on the stories of James Michener, Quast is lined up to play the French plantation owner who falls in love with a Navy nurse, played by American Lauren Kennedy. Also mooted for the company is Edward Baker-Duly as the young lieutenant who falls for a Polynesian girl. South Pacific begins a straight run in the NT's Olivier Theatre on 12 December 2001 (previews from 3 December). Full casting details are expected soon.
