American performer Joan Rivers, whose show played at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre during Fringe 2001, may be heading for the West End. Rivers has made no secret of her desire to play in London, and has anticipated arriving here within the next year. Whether this would be performing solo, or as part of a larger production is unclear at present. Rivers, the child of Russian immigrants, began her career as an actress before a guest comedian slot on the Johnny Carson Show opened several doors for her. By the 1980s she had created her own TV show, starred on Broadway and launched a publishing career. Never one to avoid controversy, Rivers' penchant for wearing fur garments has seen her become the target of several well-publicised attacks from animal welfare groups.
