Before the festival has even begun, the unlikely Broadway success Def Poetry Jam is being hailed as one of the hits of this year's Edinburgh Fringe. Featuring a collection of performance poets from various US cities, the show last month picked up the prize for Special Theatrical Event at this year's Tony Awards, beating out competition from Brit hit comedy The Play What I Wrote (See The Goss, 10 Jun 2003). It runs at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh from 1 to 25 August 2003 and is seen as a near cert for a post-festival London transfer. Other productions that have already booked their passage south, in advance of their festival debuts, include Gregory Burke's The Straits, coming to Hampstead Theatre in October, and Heather Raffo's Nine Parts of Desire, moving into the Bush in September (See Today's News).
