British novelist, comedienne, actress and star of TV's Goodness Gracious Me, Meera Syal has been linked to Andrew Lloyd Webber's upcoming project, Bombay Dreams. In a recent interview, she said that she was busily at work on the script for the musical but that she wasn't being paid much. "If you make money on musicals, it's purely on box office," she told The Sunday Telegraph. "If it works, you're all right, but it's always a risk." Syal must be hoping for a better return than Lloyd Webber's collaboration with Ben Elton, The Beautiful Game, which will close 1 September with an estimated box office loss of £1 million. Bombay Dreams is a musical set in Bollywood, Bombay's burgeoning film industry. Though backed by Lloyd Webber, it will feature original music by young Indian composer AR Rehman. Syal can herself be seen on stage later this month in Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues at the West End's New Ambassadors Theatre.
