Getting The Edge on Spiderman for Late 2009???

The musical adaptation of Spiderman could be spinning its web as early as the end of this year (See The Goss, 27 Apr 2007). The Edge, the guitarist of U2 who’s been working on the new musical with the band’s lead singer Bono, revealed this week in an interview with Q Magazine:
“We’ve written a lot of the songs at this point. It’s in a pretty good state, and I hope it’ll open this year. We’re not sure where in the world, but most likely it will be in New York.”

The Edge and Bono have been working on the piece with Tony Award-winning Lion King director Julie Taymor and scriptwriter Glenn Berger. The Edge explained: “The overall story was really Julie working with Glenn, and Bono and myself riding shotgun with the odd idea here and there.” Rather than a full orchestra, the show’s live music will emanate from a “rock’n’roll band”.

As to why he and his fellow band member wanted to get involved in the project, The Edge said: “I think the musical had its heyday back in the 1940s, ’50s, ’60s era… We’ve always harboured this sneaky ambition that maybe one day we might try our hand in that area.” U2 has previously contributed songs to the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 1990 stage play of Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange.
