Headlong and Nuffield tour new Seagull from April

Headlong and The Nuffield, Southampton will co-produce a new version of The Seagull next year, opening at the Nuffield in April.

Directed by rising star Blanche McIntrye, the production will use a “searing” new version of the play by John Donnelly.

According to press, Donnelly’s “dynamic, modern adaptation shows a world on stage, riven with hopeless love and restless dreams of success. Raw, beautiful and darkly comic, The Seagull explores emotion, creativity and romantic conflict with the clarity of a doctor and the heart of a poet.”

Blanche McIntrye won the Critics’ Circle Award for Most Promising Newcomer for Foxfinder and Accolade (Finborough Theatre), the Off West End Theatre Award for Best Director in 2012, and the inaugural winner of the Leverhulme Bursary for Emerging Theatre Directors in 2009. She was associate director at Out of Joint in 2010, and director in residence at the National Theatre Studio and the Finborough in 2009.

John Donnelly is a past winner of both the PMA Award for Best New Writer and the NSDF Sunday Times Playwriting Award. His plays include Bone (Royal Court), The Knowledge (Bush), Little Russians (Tricycle) and Poll Tax Riots (Hampstead).

The Seagull runs at The Nuffield, Southampton from 11 to 20 April 2013 before visiting Watford Palace (23-27 April), Glasgow Citizens (1-11 May), Northern Stage, Newcastle (14-18 May), Oxford Playhouse (21-25 May) and Richmond Theatre (29 May to 1 June). Full casting will be announced shortly.
