Railway Children Steams Towards Evening Standard Award

The Railway Children has been nominated alongside several leading West End shows in the new category of ‘Best Night Out’ at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

First produced by York’s Theatre Royal at the National Railway Museum in 2008, the show, which features a 60-tonne steam locomotive, transferred to a purpose-built 1000-seat venue at the former Eurostar terminal at Waterloo Station in 2010.

The nomination follows a win at the 2011 Olivier Awards, where it received the award for ‘Best Entertainment’. Chief executive of York Theatre Royal, Liz Wilson, commented that those involved with the production “couldn’t be more pleased” at being recognised again, adding that the venue aims to set “an example for regional theatre”.

The Railway Children is one of 12 shows vying for the Evening Standard award, which is the first to be decided by a public vote rather than by critics. Other nominees include Batman Live, Shrek, the Musical and Les Miserables.

The awards will be presented at the Savoy Hotel on 20 November 2011.
