Truck Offers Students an Inter@ctive Opportunity

Date: 10 October 2009

Hull Truck Theatre is offering students the opportunity to hear straight from the experts exactly how to advance their careers in the arts, whether they hope to be successful on or off-stage in the theatre world. The Careers in the Arts event takes place at Hull’s high-tech new building in Ferensway on Tuesday 27 October between 10am and 2pm, and is open to young people aged 15-21.

The event will be staged by Hull Truck’s Inter@ct team, which is responsible for Hull Truck Youth Theatre, and is experienced in running a variety of projects in co-operation with schools, colleges and universities as part of its commitment to working within the community.

Inter@ct Officer Lee Green said: “I constantly get asked by young people what it is they should be doing to help start their career in the arts. It’s a very specific area so I wanted to help give young people the information that they need, delivered by people who are currently working in the industry. I also wanted to make sure that young people are informed correctly – the arts is a hard profession to break into and requires a lot of commitment and hard work. People sometimes get the wrong impression from TV shows and think that all you have to do is be able to sing a song well to get a career and that isn’t the case.”

Hull Truck’s Creative Director John Godber will start the day off with a welcome speech, and then give way to a number of workshops and demonstrations run by arts professionals. Students will get the chance to speak to some of these theatre practitioners at the end of the day face to face, and ask advice on all aspects of stagecraft, whether it be acting, choreography, directing, technical theatre, art or costume design.

Alongside Hull Truck’s staff, representatives from actors’ union Equity, and from the entertainment industry handbook Contacts, will also be available to talk to students, as well as speakers from the University of Hull and Hull College.

Places at the Careers in the Arts event are limited and must be booked in advance by calling Lee Green on 01482 488248.
