Threat of Closure for King s Head Date: 7 November 1997
Fringe landmark the King's Head in Islington is facing closure following the London Arts Board's decision to withdraw its core funding of £35,000 a year. Director Dan Crawford, who founded London's first and best-known pub theatre 27 years ago, said the warning of withdrawal was a surprise but that if it went through as scheduled, with effect from April 1998, the theatre would be unable to continue its schedule. The King's Head has had a number of critically-acclaimed successes over the years. Its recent production of Mart Crowley's The Boys in the Band is now playing in the West End.
