Bristol Old Vic announces further details for 2013

Further details have been announced of the 2013 season in the newly-refurbished Bristol Old Vic (pictured), which will see programming expanded to include dance and the first ever Bristol Proms.

Theatre highlights include an outdoor staging of Michael Morpurgo's Aesop's Fables (13 July-1 September) and a Christmas production of The Little Mermaid directed by recent Evening Standard award-winner Simon Godwin.

Other productions in the coming months include children's dance show Varmints (10-11 May), performed in a specially constructed space on the main stage in collaboration with Sadler's Wells, Complicite's Lion Boy (29 May-1 June), the return of Kneehigh with Tristan & Yseult (3-20 July) and the English premiere of Karl Kraus' The Last Days of Mankind (18-29 June), in collaboration with Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

As previously announced, next month (7 March-4 May) sees the premiere of a new production of A Midsummer Night's Dream from the venue's artistic director Tom Morris and Handspring Puppet Company, following their collaboration on the smash hit War Horse.

'Unlocking new opportunities'

The refurbished Georgian auditorium opened in September, and now work is underway on the front of house and studio spaces.

Steve Tompkins, from architects Haworth Tompkins, said: "We are delighted to have been selected by Bristol Old Vic for the next phase of their renewal project. The theatre has an illustrious past both architecturally and as a centre for creative theatre. We hope that we can build on this past whilst unlocking new opportunities for the theatre that will support its future development."

The inaugural Bristol Proms will be staged between 29 July and 3 August 2013, in collaboration with Universal Music Arts and Entertainment and Watershed.

According to press material, "Boundary-pushing beatboxers, choirs, orchestras, ensembles, violinists and more will help to recover the interactive spontaneity of classical music and bend it into new and exciting shapes with the help of our digital/research partners Watershed."

Full programming will be announced on 4 March.
