Opening: Gatiss in 55 Days & Butterworth's The RiverDate: 22 October 2012Among this week's major London theatre openings, in the West End and further afield, are 55 Days at the Hampstead Theatre starring Mark Gatiss, Jez Butterworth's new play The River at the Royal Court, a double bill of work from Birmingham Royal Ballet, and more: Opening TuesdayOpposites Attract Birmingham Royal Ballet brings three modern ballets to Sadler's Wells. Lyric Pieces is American choreographer Jessica Lang’s first ballet for a major European company. Take Five is a tribute to jazz icon Dave Brubeck, and completing the bill is Grösse Fuge, one of Hans van Manen's most famous works. It runs at Sadler's Wells until 27 October. Opening Wednesday55 Days Howard Brenton's play about the events leading up to Charles I's execution stars Mark Gatiss as the king and Douglas Henshall as Oliver Cromwell. Directed by Howard Davies, it runs at the Hampstead Theatre until 24 November. Opening ThursdayDangerous Lady Patrick Prior's adaptation of Martina Cole's first novel, which follows the fortunes of a London Irish gangland family. It runs at the Theatre Royal Stratford East until 17 November. Opening FridayThe River A new play by Jez Butterworth, about a remote cabin on the cliffs, a man and a woman, and a moonless night. Starring Dominic West, Miranda Raison and Laura Donnelly, The River runs at the Royal Court until 17 November. Autumn Celebration 26 October 2012 The second work from Birmingham Royal Ballet at Sadler's Wells, Autumn Celebration! brings together Shakespeare, Noel Coward and an Olympic theme.
