Full cast for Hedda Gabler with Sheridan Smith announced

Date: 10 July 2012

Daniel Lapaine and Darrell D'Silva will join Sheridan Smith in a forthcoming run of Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler at the Old Vic, which opens on 12 September 2012 (previews from 5 September).

D'Silva plays Judge Brack, a family friend of Hedda’s – a predatory presence who comes to learn her scandalous secret. D’Silva’s previous credits include Children’s Children at the Almeida, The White Devil at the Menier Chocolate Factory, Royal Hunt of the Sun at the National and roles in Anthony and Cleopatra and King Lear with the RSC.

Lapaine will play Loevborg, former love to Sheridan’s Hedda and a rival to Adrian Scarborough’s Tesman. His previous theatre credits include All My Sons at the Apollo and Fucking Games at the Royal Court.

The Norwegian classic, directed by Anna Mackmin, will use a new version of Ibsen’s 1890 text by Irish playwright Brian Friel.

The play, heralded by critics as a triumph of realism, follows the rapidly-disintegrating marriage of the rich and passionate Hedda Gabler, who is frustrated by the pedestrian lifestyle of her new husband Tesman.

Other previously-announced members of the cast include Whatsonstage.com award nominee Anne Reid (Dimetos, Happy Now) as Juliana Tesman, Buffy Davis (The Government Inspector, Annie Get Your Gun, The Beggar’s Opera) as Bertha and Fenella Woolgar (The Real Thing, Time and The Conways) as Thea Elvsted.
