Date: 8 March 2012

Stephen Sondheim has won the fifth annual Sheridan Morley Prize for Theatre Biography for his new collection of annotated lyrics Look, I Made A Hat.

The composer topped a shortlist that featured autobiographies by James Corden, Isla Blair and Steven Berkoff and a biography of Lionel Bart by David and Caroline Stafford.

The prize, which is awarded for the best biography, autobiography or diary in theatre or show business published in the preceding calendar year, was awarded in a ceremony today at The Garrick Club.

This year's jury, chaired by Ruth Leon, comprised Georgina Brown, theatre critic for the Mail on Sunday, playwright and screenwriter Martin Sherman, and actor, writer and director Simon Callow - the recipient of last year’s prize for My Life in Pieces.

Sondheim, whose book is a follow-up to 2010's Finishing the Hat, receives a £2000 cash prize. He said: “I am genuinely surprised and thrilled. Recognition, liquor and cash - what more could any writer want?”
