Gareth Gates Leads UK Tour of Hair, Opens April 2012

Date: 20 October 2011

As previously tipped by Whatsonstage.com, Gareth Gates will star in a UK tour of 60s rock musical Hair next year.

Gary Lloyd's international touring production will open at the Liverpool Empire on 9 April 2012 and tour through to mid-July. Gates, who shot to fame in the first series of ITV's Pop Idol, will play the leading role of Claude, who falls in with a group of hippies called the Tribe.

Hair
has book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt MacDermot. The score includes numbers such as “Aquarius”, “Ain’t Got No”, “I Got Life”, “Good Morning Starshine”, "Let the Sun Shine In" and the title song.

It was last seen in the West End in 2010 when the full Broadway company of the Public Theater production were transferred to the Gielgud Theatre by impresario Cameron Mackintosh. The show played a five-month run from 14 April (previews from 1 April) to 4 September 2010.

Gareth Gates has notched up a number of musical theatre credits in recent years, including the title role in the West End production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, as well as starring in the 25th Anniversary production of Les Misérables.

Hair will be produced by EJB Entertainment and Charles Aerts Entertainment in association with The Booking Office.

I'm happy Hair gets another run in the UK, and whilst I'm not thrilled about Gareth Gates, I'm willing to give him a chance. As for the him naked comment - Claude doesn't get naked. So calm yourself. - Anon
