Opening: Soho Giovanni, NYT Tunnels & South Pacific

Amongst the major London openings, in the West End and further afield, this week are:

OPENING TONIGHT, Monday 22 August 2011 (previews from 11 August), following its Olivier and Whatsonstage.com Award-winning La boheme, OperaUpClose returns to Soho Theatre with its new modern, English-language version of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, in a limited season to 17 September.

ALSO TONIGHT (previews from 19 August), the National Youth Theatre launches a season at the Old Vic Tunnels, Waterloo with Our Days of Rage, comprising 9/11 responses written by young people, continuing until 15 September.


OPENING TUESDAY, 23 August 2011 (previews from 15 August), the Lincoln Center’s Tony Award-winning revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific opens at the Barbican Theatre ahead of a UK tour, starring Samantha Womack and Paulo Szot.

OPENING TUESDAY, the White Bear in Kennington plays host to a new production of Arthur Schnitzler’s sexual carousel La Ronde, with in a new translation by Lukas Raphael. Until 4 September.


OPENING WEDNESDAY, Batman Live arrives at the O2 Arena as part of a world tour. Billed as “a multi-million pound stage production of unprecedented scale and a must-see for families and Batman fans everywhere”, it continues until 4 September.


OPENING THURSDAY, 25 August 2011 (previews from 23 August), Halcyon Days, written and directed by Japan’s Shoji Kokami, gets its English-language premiere at Riverside Studios, running until 18 September.  

ALSO ON THURSDAY, National Youth Theatre’s Old Vic Tunnels season continues with Molly Davies’ adaptation of underground Greek myth Orpheus and Eurydice, which continues until 17 September.

ALSO ON THURSDAY, The Company Youth Music Theatre’s revival of Jerry Herman's Broadway classic Mack and Mabel arrives at Greenwich Theatre for a run to 27 August.
