Sophie Okonedo will return to the stage in Haunted Child

Cast: Full West End Maiden, Okonedo Haunted at Court

Date: 19 August 2011

Full casting has been announced for the forthcoming West End revival of Chilean playwright Ariel Dorfman’s Olivier Award-winning thriller Death and the Maiden, which opens at the Comedy Theatre on 24 October 2011 (previews from 13 October) starring Thandie Newton.

Newton, who makes her stage acting debut, plays former political prisoner Paulina Salas in Dorfman’s account of confession and revenge set against the backdrop of a new democracy, emerging from a long period of dictatorship.

She'll be joined in the three-hander by Tom Goodman-Hill, who plays her husband Gerado, and Anthony Calf as Doctor Roberto Miranda.

Olivier Award nominee Tom Goodman-Hill has performed in a number of West End productions including Enron, Monty Python's Spamalot (Olivier Award nominee for Best Supporting Performer in a Musical) and An Inspector Calls.

Anthony Calf has appeared in many productions for the Donmar Warehouse, National Theatre and The Royal Court, with recent credits including Les Parents Terribles (Donmar Trafalgar Season), The Deep Blue Sea (Chichester Festival Theatre) and The Power of Yes (National Theatre).

This will be the first West End revival of Death and the Maiden since the world premiere at the Royal Court in 1991, which transferred to the Duke of York’s Theatre in 1992 where it played for 12 months. The new production will be directed by the Royal Court’s current deputy artistic director Jeremy Herrin.

In other casting news, Sophie Okonedo will return to the stage to star alongside Ben Daniels in Joe Penhall's new play Haunted Child, which premieres at the Royal Court in December, also directed by Herrin.

The play, which runs from 8 December 2011 to 14 January 2012 (previews from 8 December), centres on a small boy who is driving his mother to distraction – waking at night, hearing phantom noises and fixating on his absent father.

Okonedo, rarely seen on stage but renowned for her screen work,  received an Oscar nomination for her role in Hotel Rwanda (2004), a Golden Globe nomination for Tsunami: The Aftermath, and BAFTA nominations for Criminal Justice and Mrs Mandela. Her other film credits include Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, Dirty Pretty Things and Skin.

Ben Daniels was recently seen in Luise Miller at the Donmar. Other stage credits include Tales of Hollywood, The Wild Duck and God of Hell at the Donmar and All My Sons at the National (for which he won an Olivier and Whatsonstage.com Award).
