1st Night Photos: Liza Minnelli Shares UmbrellasDate: 23 March 2011Kneehigh Theatre Company's adaptation of Michel Legrand's 1964 French film musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg opened at the West End's Gielgud Theatre last night (22 March, previews from 5 March), where an eclectic range of guests included the composer himself and Liza Minnelli, who once recorded a version of the Oscar-winning song "I Will Wait for You". Adapted and directed by Emma Rice with a translation by Sheldon Harnick the story is described in marketing material as "a French romance that just happens to be sung". The production, which features a cast including two-time Olivier Award winner Joanna Riding and cabaret star Meow Meow, played Leicester's Curve Theatre prior to its West End transfer.
