Connie Fisher Leads Wonderful Town at Lowry

Date: 28 February 2011

The Royal Exchange Theatre, The Hallé Orchestra and The Lowry will combine their artistic forces to present Leonard Bernstein’s classic musical comedy, Wonderful Town with a cast led by the winner of the BBC’s How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? Connie Fisher.

The production, which will play the Lowry from 31 March to 14 April 2012, has Royal Exchange artistic director Braham Murray at the helm, with Bernstein’s musical score will be performed by The Hallé Orchestra, conducted by their musical director, Mark Elder.

Connie Fisher, who went on to star in West End and touring productions of The Sound of Music after winning the televised search for a Maria, plays aspiring writer Ruth Sherwood who arrives in New York with her beautiful younger sister Eileen. The indomitable pair meet an array of colourful characters along the way, creating chaos at every turn in their search for romance, success and a free meal at Walgreens deli.

Wonderful Town first premiered in New York in 1953 where it won five Tony Awards including Best Musical. The 2003 Broadway revival also won further Tony and Drama Desk Awards.

Director Braham Murray said at the launch recently: "To direct a great musical with a fabulous orchestra and world renowned conductor is a dream come true. There is only one word to describe it... WONDERFUL!"

Wonderful Town has a book by Joseph Fields and Jerome Chodorov, music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. The muscial is based upon Fields and Chodorov's play My Sister Eileen and the stories of Ruth Mckenney. Set and costumes are by Simon Higlett.
