Celebrated Playwright Premieres Tense Drama in Scarborough

Award winning playwright Fiona Evans returns to theatre next week with the premiere of her most recent play; a tense and thrilling critical examination of the price that we pay for material possessions. The Price of Everything premiers at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough next week, where it will run from the 28 October to 13 November 2010.

The story centres around Eddie Caver, a successful entrepreneur who has worked his way into an ideal lifestyle of flashy cars and designer clothes, with the perfect home and the perfect family. Having come from humble beginnings, Eddie always makes sure his wife and daughter want for nothing and always get the best. Until one day, something changes and Eddie’s behaviour becomes erratic and frenzied. What could have caused this bizarre turnabout and can the imposing high walls and CCTV of their grand home keep Eddie and his family safe from this dangerous threat?

Speaking about the play Fiona says that “The Price of Everything is an attempt to look behind the closed doors of those dream homes, to explore the lengths people go to for an apparently idyllic lifestyle and to ask the question – is it worth it?”

Fiona is a critically acclaimed writer and in 2007 having won a Fringe First at the Edinburgh festival in 2007 for Scarborough which then transferred to the Royal Court Theatre. She has also written Geoff Dead: Disco for Sale which premiered at the Live Theatre, Newcastle in 2008. Since then she has focused her talents on television writing for the BBC, having written episodes of Eastenders, Casualty, Holby City and Doctors.

The Price of Everything was commissioned by artistic director at Stephen Joseph Theatre, Chris Monks. Fiona says “Chris gave me an amazing opportunity with this new commission. A playwright longs for the day when an artistic director shows faith in their writing. Enough faith to first commission them and then to give them the freedom to write the play they really want to write.”

The Price of Everything will star Andrew Dunn who appeared in Victoria Wood’s Dinnerladies; Julie Riley who recently starred in Amateur Girl at Hull Truck Theatre; and seventeen year old rising star Jodie Comer. It will be directed by Noreen Kershaw who is an actress as well as an established director with credits at Octagon Theatre, Bolton and episodes of Coronation Street, Shameless, Emmerdale and Heartbeat. As an actress she is best known as WPC Phyllis Dobbs in the BBC series Life On Mars.
