Opening: Holding, Charity Transfer, Election Drama

Amongst the major London openings - in the West End and further afield - this week are:

OPENING TONIGHT, Tuesday 4 May 2010 (previews from 23 April), Australian hit Holding the Man, based on Tim Conigrave’s memoir about his lifelong love affair with John Caleo, makes its UK premiere at Trafalgar Studios 1, with a cast including Kath & Kim star Jane Turner.

ALSO ON TONIGHT, (previews from 23 April), Matthew White's Menier Chocolate Factory revival of Sweet Charity transfers to the Theatre Royal Haymarket, starring Tamzin Outhwaite in the title role (See News, 19 Feb 2010).

ALSO ON TONIGHT, Filter’s acclaimed reworking of Twelfth Night returns for a third season at the Tricycle Theatre, where it continues until 29 May 2010.

ALSO ON TONIGHT, Charlotte Jones' Airswimming is revived at Islington's Hen and Chickens theatre, where it continues to 22 May.


ALSO OPENING WEDNESDAY, 5 May 2010, Those Magnificent Men, about British aviation pioneers John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown, visits Greenwich Theatre as part of a national tour.

ALSO ON WEDNESDAY (previews from 29 April), Sarah Ruhl’s reimagining of the Greek myth Eurydice opens at the Young Vic, directed by Bijan Sheibani. Until 5 June.

ALSO ON WEDNESDAY, celebrated director Yukio Ninagawa returns to the Barbican Theatre following the sell out Kabuki season of Twelfth Night After William Shakespeare with Musashi, which combines "contemporary comedy elements of Noh and Kyogen and the spirit of the Samurai". Until 8 May.

ALSO ON WEDNESDAY, John Cooper's adaptation of George Eliot's Daniel Deronda is staged Upstairs at the Gatehouse, directed by Harry Meacher. Until 29 May 2010.


OPENING THURSDAY, 6 May 2010, Clive Mantle stars as Tommy Cooper in Jus’ Like That at the Rose Theatre, Kingston as part of a national tour.


OPENING SATURDAY, 8 May 2010, the New Players Theatre hosts Election Drama - A Theatrical Response, a series of plays written and rehearsed in 24 hours in response to the result of Thursday's general election (See News, 27 Apr 2010).
