Lloyd Webber Announces Love Never Dies Today
Lloyd Webber Announces Love Never Dies Today
Date: 8 October 2009

The wait’s nearly over! Journalists from around the world will gather at 10.30am today for the official launch announcement of Love Never Dies, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s long-awaited sequel to The Phantom of the Opera (See News, 11 Sep 2009).

At the press conference - held at Her Majesty’s Theatre, home of The Phantom of the Opera since it premiered 23 years ago this week – Lloyd Webber will be joined by the show’s director Jack O'Brien and the stars of the show, who will perform extracts.

Though full details will be confirmed shortly, Love Never Dies is expected to open on 9 March 2009 (previews from 20 February) at the West End’s Adelphi Theatre, starring Ramin Karimloo as the Phantom, American Sierra Boggess as Christine, and Summer Strallen as Meg Giry.

Love Never Dies is set in 1907, ten years after the conclusion of the original story. The Phantom has escaped to New York with Madame and Meg Giry and found success in Coney Island as a magician and entertainer. When he builds a new opera house, he persuades his old ingenue Christine Daae, now a huge star and married to her old flame Raoul, to sing for him once more...

The musical, which has lyrics by Glenn Slater, is directed by Jack O'Brien and designed by Bob Crowley, with choreography by Jerry Mitchell and lighting by Paule Constable.

It's odd how so many journalists jump on the promo people's statements about it being a "much-awaited" sequel and something all fans have longed for. You don't need to browse a lot in Phantom forums and other online communities before finding that although there are people looking forward to this, there seems to be a bigger group not thrilled about the idea at all. One thing is the feeling of "Phantom of the Opera" not needing a sequel. Another thing is the standard Andrew Lloyd Webber has been on the last couple of years. He's written decent stuff, but far from the genius stuff he wrote in the 70s and 80s. What has been released from "Love Never Dies" so far seems to be more on the level of "Woman in White" than "Evita", to put it mildly. It would be interesting to see what might come out of it if journalists made a case on the "not too happy about this" side of the phantom fans. I know many are tired of being presented as "super thrilled about the sequel", when this is not the case at all. Many has NOT waited long for this, and after the disasterous movie version in 2004 the thought of another mediocre spin-off is not too appealing - and not worthy of one of the corner stones of british musical theatre. - Anéa

Blech. Can't he leave well enough alone instead of pandering to the fangirls who just want Christine to end up with the Phantom? - Stefania

I love all Andrew Lloyd Webber's productions. Feel very excited about the new musical 'Love Never Dies'. As previously mentioned by a reader I do not feel that there is a need to be to perdantic about the dates or lapse in time. I come from a theatrical background and theatre is my passion. Having seen 'The Phantom of the Opera' three times with family and friends. My only fear is that maybe a sequel to 'The Phantom' may not be as popular. Am sure that Andrew has moments of feeling this too! Having said this am sure and hope that I am going to be proved wrong!? Would love to see a preview of the Show in March. What do I need to do to apply for tickets? Good Luck with the production Andrew. You deserve every success. from: Wendy - Wendy Salter-Williams

ALW doesn't seem to have realised that 1907 is *not* 10 years after the original, which is set in 1881... - RS
