I’m Dreaming of a White Autumn… at the Savoy

Getting a serious jump on the Christmas trade is another film-to-stage musical classic. White Christmas will open at the Savoy Theatre on 8 October, following previews from 24 September. The production is booking to 26 January 2002.

The new staging of Irving Berlin’s (pictured) 1954 screen musical tells the story of Second World War veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis who become partners in a song-and-dance act after the war. Looking for love, the two follow a duo of beautiful singing sisters who have a Christmas gig at a Vermont lodge, which just happens to be owned by their former army commander, General Waverley. Unfortunately, times are hard for the general whose mountain retreat is suffering from lack of snow. Romantic entanglements and plenty of good intentions ensue as the singers try to find a solution for the General.

The 1954 film, which has become a fixture on the festive television schedule, was directed by Michael Curtiz and starred Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney. The score includes the Academy Award-winning title song first featured in Berlin’s 1942 film, Holiday Inn, which also starred Crosby as well as Fred Astaire.

No casting details for the West End stage adaptation have yet been confirmed. D’Oyly Carte’s production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance is currently playing at the Savoy, where it is booking to 16 June 2001.
