Ruthie Henshall Signed Up to Star as Peggy Sue

Date: 29 March 2001

Broadway star Ruthie Henshall is expected to lead the cast of Peggy Sue Got Married in a new version at London's Shaftesbury Theatre. The show will open on the south coast in July before arriving in the West End in late August.

A spokesperson for producers Paul Elliott & Triumph Entertainment Limited said that "the contract with Ms Henshall has been negotiated and accepted. Now we are waiting for the formal documents to be finalised." Rehearsals will begin in May, before the musical kicks off at Plymouth on 7 July. It will then move on to Southampton in August, before previews at the Shaftesbury commence on 29 Aug. Tickets, however, are not on sale as yet.

Henshall's credits on Broadway include Putting It Together, Chicago and Miss Saigon. She also won an Olivier Award for her role in London's She Loves Me.

Peggy Sue Got Married relates the romantic experiences of a housewife who has a supernatural experience and time travels back to her 1950s high school days. The 1986 film version starred Nicholas Cage and Kathleen Turner. The stage version, with lyrics by Arlene Sarner and Jerry Leichtling set to Bob Gaudio's music, premiered in Chicago in 1999.
