Freddie Jones Joins right size in BewildernessDate: 3 May 2001
A new comedy from Olivier-award winning double act Sean Foley and Hamish McColl, aka the right size, will play at the Lyric Hammersmith from 2 May to 2 June. Entitled Bewilderness, the production features the celebrated veteran actor Freddie Jones plus the duo's regular musical collaborator Chris Larner.
The story of two men who fell down the back of a sofa, Bewilderness is possibly the result of an alleged mishap that befell the right size. They claim that having gone missing, about which no-one cared, they were discovered wandering naked along the B1102 outside Uttoxeter. The "terrifying upholstered underworld" of their new show may well reflect this bizarre experience, be it real or imagined.
Freddie Jones will be making his first stage appearances for nearly a decade. In between a successful theatre career, he has also performed in over 80 films, whilst featuring in the television comedy The League of Gentlemen, and in the 2000 adaptation of David Copperfield, as Barkis. Bewilderness is directed by Joss Houben and designed by another long-term right size collaborator Alice Power.
This will be the first new devised show from Foley and McColl since Do You Come Here Often, their acclaimed comedy about two men stuck in a bathroom for 25 years. Having made its mark at the Edinburgh Festival, it transferred to the West End and won the 1999 Olivier Award for Best Entertainment. The show also met with similar success in New York, playing to full houses at PS122, off-Broadway.
Alongside this, the right size also worked on a co-production of Brecht's Mr Puntila and his Man Matti with the Almeida Theatre. Foley and McColl played the title roles in a show that was nominated for the 1998 TMA/Barclays Award for Best Touring Production.
