Lee Mead, Suchet & Cabaret Scoop Variety Awards

Date: 19 November 2007

Any Dream Will Do winner and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat star Lee Mead won the prize for Outstanding New Talent at the 55th annual Variety Club Showbusiness Awards, in a star-studded ceremony hosted by singer and TV presenter Myleene Klass last night (18 November 2007) at the London Hilton.

In other theatre-related categories, David Suchet (pictured) won Stage Performance of the Year for his role as a crime-solving cardinal in Roger Crane’s Vatican-set thriller The Last Confession, which transferred to the West End’s Theatre Royal Haymarket this summer after its premiere at Chichester Festival, and Rufus Norris’ revival of Kander and Ebb Cabaret, running at the West End’s Lyric theatre since last October, took home the prize for Best Musical Theatre.

In addition to theatre, the Showbusiness Awards cover film, radio, television and popular music. Other winners last night included Keira Knightley, Jude Law, Lee Evans, Philip Glenister, Jerry Springer, Katherine Jenkins, Westlife and Michael Parkinson.

The awards season continues with our own Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Awards, the only major theatre prize-giving to be decided by the public, the nominations phase of which is taking place online now. Throughout November, theatregoers can nominate their favourite performances and productions for Awards consideration across all 24 categories.

The full Awards shortlists will be announced on Friday 7 December 2007 at a star-studded lunchtime ceremony, guest hosted by the first lady of British musical theatre, Elaine Paige OBE, and held in aid of this year’s adopted charity, Mousetrap Theatre Projects, at Café de Paris. After the launch party, the race will be on to decide the eventual Theatregoers’ Choice Award winners, with voting continuing for two months from Monday 10 December and results announced in mid-February 2008.

First Magazine - the UK’s must-read weekly glossy magazine for smart, stylish women - is media partner for the 2008 Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Awards. Other sponsors include: Superbreak, the market leader for short breaks throughout the UK; Nick Hern Books, the UK’s leading independent theatre publishers and performing rights licensors; leading live entertainment marketing services agencies aka and Dewynters plc; and theatre and event ticketing providers Ticketmaster and See Tickets.
