Bush Plans Flight & LaBute in New Autumn SeasonDate: 6 July 2007
The new Bush Theatre season will feature Josie Rourke’s directorial debut for the venue since becoming artistic director in April 2007, a new production by Out of Joint and a double bill of Neil LaBute plays.
Kicking off the season on 17 September 2007 (following previews from 12 September) is Flight Path, a new play by 22 year old David Watson. Produced by Out of Joint, and directed by Naomi Jones, it is billed as a funny and touching drama about loyalty, families and friendship. David Watson had his first play, Just a Bloke, staged at the Royal Court as part of their Young Writer’s Festival when he was only 17 years old. Following its run at the Bush, Flight Path embarks on a UK tour including dates at Birmingham, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Wakefield.
On 16 October (previews from 10 October), Josie Rourke directs the world premiere of How to Curse by Ian McHugh. Her first production as Artistic Director of the Bush Theatre, her other work includes The Cryptogram at the Donmar Warehouse, King John at the RSC and Crazyblackmuthafuckin’self at the Royal Court. How to Curse is the story of three young people marooned in Great Yarmouth, and is the author’s debut play. It is designed by Christopher Oram, with lighting by Hartley T A Kemp.
Following How to Curse on 20 November (previews from 14 November), is Mike Packer’s tHe dYsFUnCKshOnalZ!, his third comedy for the Bush Theatre, following A Carpet, A Pony and a Monkey and Card Boys. 30 years after the punk music movement, can former band tHe dYsFUnCKshOnalZ! keep the Anarchy flag flying by deciding not to sell out to the corporate giants?
Finally, wrapping up the Autumn/Winter season on 17 January 2008 (previews from 15 Jan) is the British premiere of a Neil LaBute double bill. Helter Skelter / Land of the Dead, directed by Patricia Benecke, is a Dialogue Production in association with the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford. Award winning playwright, screen writer and film director LaBute’s credits include Some Girl(s), This is How It Goes and The Shape of Things.
In addition to their production of Elling, which is currently running at the Trafalgar Studios (See News, 6 Jun 2007), the Bush Theatre’s Richard Wilson-led show Whipping it Up– which transferred to the New Ambassador’s Theatre in February (See News, 11 Jan 07) – will embark on a regional tour from 4 September 2007. Opening at Woking, the tour then calls at Southend, Cheltenham, Aberdeen, Richmond, Brighton, Bath, Glasgow, Bromley and Salford.
