Uys Runs Evita for South African President at TrikeDate: 5 July 2007
South Africa’s answer to Dame Edna Everage, Evita Bezuidenhout (aka Pieter-Dirk Uys, pictured with Nelson Mandela), returns to north London’s Tricycle Theatre, where a new solo show, Evita for President, which runs from 1 August (previews from 30 July) to 1 September 2007.
Although the General Election is still two years away, the African National Congress will vote in a new President of the Party at the end of 2007 and the question on most South Africans’ minds is: who will be the next President to follow in the footsteps of Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki? As the succession battle heats up, Pieter-Dirk Uys offers a new candidate, Mrs Evita Bezuidenhout, who might eventually be the only choice for President.
Uys’ previous Evita-led satires include Elections and Erections, Adapt or Dye and Foreign Aids, both of which have had previous London runs. Claiming he is more of a reactor than an actor, Uys was born and "invented" in South Africa, where his other widely performed plays include Paradise is Closing Down, Panorama and Beyond All Reason.
Currently at the Tricycle, actor-turned-playwright Neil D’Souza’s debut play Small Miracle finishes this Saturday 7 July 2007. It’s followed by mind reader Marc Salem, who returns to the Tricycle from 10 to 29 July 2007 with his latest offering Mind Games Extra.
