Elaine Paige Gets Drowsy in New WOS Magazine

Date: 1 May 2007

The latest issue of our sister print title What’s On Stage Magazine is out now, available in 35 participating London theatres as well as selected hotels, restaurants and tourist bureaux. Amongst the great features in May are:

  • FROM NAUGHTIES TO TWENTIES - With The Drowsy Chaperone about to open, Roger Foss meets Elaine Paige, and co-writer Bob Martin recalls how a Broadway hit began as a wedding gift

  • NOW BOOKING - Absolute Beginners, Vernon God Little and The Lord of the Rings are the latest novels to get a theatrical makeover. Michael Coveney examines the page-to-stage phenomenon. Includes interviews with Rufus Norris, Tanya Ronder and Roy Williams

  • ACTORS REUNITED - As Antony Sher returns to the West End to play legendary 19th-century tragedian Edmund Kean, we wonder how great acting is passed down through the generations, tracing thespian lineage from Richard Burrage through David Garrick, Henry Irving, Laurence Olivier and others

  • HERE COME THE JUDGES - Just for a bit of fun, we turn the tables and put the panellists from TV talent shows Any Dream Will Do and Grease Is the Word under the spotlight. David Gest versus Denise Van Outen: who comes tops?

  • QUEEN ROCKS ON - The critics sneered at We Will Rock You, but as the musical celebrates its fifth birthday, Brian May says the people have proven them wrong. (An abridged version of this version is also on the website this week – get a sneak peek by clicking here…)

We’ve also got all of your favourite regular magazine sections, including Headliners (news, previews and snippet interviews), Up for Grabs competitions, Limelight pictures, this month’s What’s On Guide diary and listings, Brief Encounter and, last but not least, Critical Comment, in which our columnist, Guardian critic Michael Billington, this month identifies theatre’s three E’s – Entertainment, Enlightenment and, rarest of all, Ecstasy.

Copies of the magazine at its various outlets are often scooped up very fast. To get future copies sent to your home, why not subscribe to our Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Club?
