Atheist Launches New 503 Directors' First SeasonDate: 17 January 2007
Up-and-coming fringe theatre, Battersea’s Theatre503 (formerly The Latchmere), opens its spring season tomorrow night (Thursday 18 January 2007, following previews from Tuesday 16 January) with American Ronan Noone’s The Atheist - the first production under the leadership of newly appointed artistic directors Tim Roseman and Paul Robinson.
The Atheist, which stars Ben Porter as a crooked journalist and is directed by Ari Edelson, runs to 3 February 2007. Following The Atheist, the spring schedule continues with the premieres of Ship of Fools (from 20 February to 10 March 2007) by Andrew Bovell (who co-wrote Strictly Ballroom with Baz Luhrmann), directed by Toby Frow, and Robin French double bill Breakfast Hearts and Choirplay (from 20 March to 7 April 2007), directed by Jennie Fellows.
Theatre503 was founded in 1982 when the Gate Theatre in Notting Hill expanded to include a studio theatre above the Latchmere Pub. It was taken over by a new team in 2002 and relaunched as a new writing theatre, winning the Peter Brook Empty Space Award in 2004 (See News, 4 Nov 2004) for championing work by the likes of Anthony Neilson, Ron Hutchinson, Naomi Wallace and Gary Owen.
Tim Roseman and Paul Robinson became Theatre503’s artistic directors at the end of last year, taking over from Paul Higgins. Roseman’s directing credits include reviving David Grindley's production of Journey's End at the New Ambassadors in the West End, as well as The Arab-Israeli Cookbook. He has also worked with the creative teams of numerous new plays with the Old Vic, Young Vic, Soho Theatre, Royal Court, Hampstead Theatre and Almeida, among others.
Robinson is associate director on Tom Stoppard’s Rock 'n' Roll at the Duke of York’s. His other credits include Who Killed Mr Drum? and Hello and Goodbye. He was staff director at the National for two years, during which time he worked on Falstaff and Duck Variations.
