Evans & Isaacs Revive Pinter's Waiter in West EndDate: 2 January 2007
Lee Evans (pictured) and Jason Isaacs will star in a West End revival of Harold Pinter’s two-hander The Dumb Waiter, at Trafalgar Studios for a limited run from 8 February to 24 March 2007 (previews from 2 February).
The 1960 play, one of Pinter’s earliest, is set in an airless basement in Birmingham, where two hit men await instructions for their next killing. The men – one strong and silent and the other incessantly talkative - realise they’re not alone when the dumb waiter (the mini-elevator used to transport meals and dirty dishes between floors) starts moving.
Perrier Award-winning comedian Lee Evans’ West End credits include his popular turn as Leo Bloom in The Producers at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, for which he was nominated for a Whatsonstage.com Award, as well as Samuel Beckett’s Endgame opposite Michael Gambon at the Albery Theatre in 2004. His films include Funny Bones, There’s Something About Mary, The Fifth Element, The Ladies Man, The Martins and The Medallion.
Jason Isaacs is best recognised for his screen credits including: on film, the Harry Potter series, Armageddon, Divorcing Jack, The End of the Affair, The Patriot, Schindler’s List, Sweet November; and on television, The State Within and The West Wing. His stage credits include Tony Kushner’s Angels in America at the National Theatre.
The Dumb Waiter is directed by Harry Burton, who has previously worked with Pinter in many productions as an actor. Burton received acclaim for directing readings of Pinter’s The Room and The Dumb Waiter for the Royal Court’s 50th anniversary season, and has directed a new Channel Four television film Pinter in Person.
Currently at Trafalgar Studio 1, Rik Mayall’s political comedy The New Statesman, based on his hit TV series, finishes its limited season on 27 January 2007 (See News, 13 Nov 2006).
