NTS Brings Dissocia to Court, Tours Tutti & AALST
Date: 12 December 2006

In its second season, the National Theatre of Scotland (NTS) will bring Anthony Neilson’s acclaimed 2004 Edinburgh International Festival hit The Wonderful World of Dissocia to London for four weeks at the Royal Court, reuniting the entire original cast and creative team.

On a journey in search of one lost hour that tipped the balance of her life, Lisa Jones meets the funny, friendly and brutal inhabitants of the wonderful world she finds herself in, Dissocia. Written and directed by Neilson (whose other plays include The Lying Kind, Stitching and The Night Before Christmas), The Wonderful World of Dissocia is performed by James Cunningham, Christine Entwistle, Alan Francis, Amanda Hadingue, Jack James, Clair Little, Matthew Pidgeon and Barnaby Power.

Co-produced by Plymouth’s Drum Theatre and Glasgow’s Tron, The Wonderful World of Dissocia is at the Royal Court from 28 March to 21 April 2007. Its tour opens in Glasgow (28 February to 10 March 2007) before visiting Dundee, London, Plymouth, Oxford, Warwick, York, Edinburgh and Newcastle.

Other NTS productions scheduled for spring 2007 include:

  • AALST (presented with Victoria and Tramway) - A young couple check into a hotel room with two small children; a week passes before police make a chilling discovery. Conceived, directed and designed by Pol Heyvaert, in a new version by Duncan McLean, the piece opens at the Tramway in Glasgow (21 to 31 March 2007) and then tours to Macrobert, North Edinburgh, Brunton, London’s Soho Theatre (17 to 28 April) and Warwick before concluding at Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre (15 to 19 May).

  • Tutti Frutti - Twenty-three years on from their chart success, Scottish pop group The Majestic are still mourning the loss of their front man. John Byrne (pictured with NTS artistic director Vicky Featherstone) adapted his 1987 TV comedy-drama for the stage in a sell-out NTS tour this year. It’s back on the road in 2007, opening at Glasgow’s King’s Theatre (12 to 21 April) and then visiting Edinburgh and Blackpool. Tony Cownie directs.

  • Futurology – A Global Revue - Suspect Culture’s new devised show, co-produced by NTS and Brighton Festival, asks the only question anyone really cares about: is everything going to be alright? It’s at Glasgow’s SECC from 10 to 14 April and then tours to Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Brighton.

  • Venus as a Boy - Tam Dean Burn adapts and co-directs his own adaptation of Luke Sutherland’s novel about a man dying in Soho, where pimps, hormones and a transsexual named Wendy finally break him. Presented by NTS Workshop for developing work, it has one-off dates in Scotland in late June.

Unlike the London-sited National Theatre (for all of Great Britain), the NTS is not building based and has a specific remit to spread its productions far and wide. After years in the planning, it launched its inaugural programme on 25 February 2006 with nine new productions opening simultaneously around Scotland (See News, 2 Nov 2005). In its first year, it created a total of 28 productions attended by 100,000 people in 62 locations. Its biggest hit to date – Gregory Burke’s Black Watch, premiered to multi award-winning success at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe – will also tour in 2007, with details due to be announced next month (See The Goss, 15 Aug 2005).
