Rylance Makes Extra Measure His Globe Farewell

As artistic director Mark Rylance (pictured) completes his final season at the Shakespeare’s Globe this weekend, there is one more production to look forward. Following the summer’s regular repertory, last year’s production of Measure for Measure, featuring Rylance in the cast, will return for a strictly limited season from 6 to 16 October 2005 before departing on a coast-to-coast tour of the US.

Originally performed with a company of men and women players as part of 2004's Season of Star-Crossed Lovers and televised live on BBC4 in September 2004, the ‘original practices’ staging explores clothing, music, dance and settings possible in the Globe of 1599.

The limited run of 13 performances this time features an all-male cast largely drawn from the original company, including Rylance as Duke Vincentio, with Liam Brennan as Angelo and Edward Hogg as Isabella.

After its London dates, Measure for Measure will launch its US tour on 26 October 2005 in Minneapolis. It will then visit Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, before finishing its stint in the US on 1 January 2006 in New York.

Meanwhile, the 2005 summer theatre season at Shakespeare’s Globe, celebrating the influence of classical Greece on Shakespeare’s works, finishes this Sunday (2 October 2005). The four productions in The Season of the World and the Underworld - Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Pericles and The Winter's Tale and a new adaptation of Plautus’ Roman comedy The Storm - tell stories of shipwrecks, storms, and daughters lost and found.

Dominic Dromgoole take over as artistic director at the end of 2005 when Mark Rylance completes his tenth year at the South Bank landmark which he helped to launch (See News, 20 May 2005).
