Galas Raise Funds for Jermyn St & Sound Theatres

Two fringe venues in the heart of the West End – the Jermyn Street Theatre and the new Sound Theatre in Leicester Square – will be holding gala events next month to raise much-needed funds for their operations.

The Sound Theatre gala evening will take place at the venue on Sunday 4 September 2005, with performances and speeches by Sound patrons including Damian Lewis, Helen McCrory and Kate Ford, and music from Badly Drawn Boy.

Just launched in June (See News, 25 May 2005), the 200-seat Leicester Square studio, converted from a former nightclub, is dedicated to presenting commercial new writing and giving a voice to new acting, directing and writing talent, offering affordable tickets at only £15 (£10 concessions) for every theatre production.

The three acclaimed Sound productions presented to date have been The Laramie Project, Frankie and Johnnie in the Clair de Lune and, currently showing, Prometheus Bound, starring David Oyelowo of BBC TV drama Spooks fame in the title role.

At the West End’s Criterion Theatre at Piccadilly Circus, stars will gather in the presence of HRH Princess Michael of Kent on Sunday 11 September 2005 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the nearby Jermyn Street Theatre.

Performers who have appeared on stage at Jermyn Street will be reprising extracts from their shows as well as new material. Among those lined up for the event so far are (subject to availability) Rosemary Ashe, Janie Dee, Tim McArthur, Liz Robertson, Nickolas Grace, Bonnie Langford, Stephen Carlile, Sarah Lark, Cassidy Janson and Clive Carter, who also directs. Guest presenters will include Terence Stamp, Joanna Lumley and Gyles Brandreth.

Tickets for the 7.00pm performance cost between £25 and £100, with top-price tickets including an after-show reception. For further information, call the box office on 020 7287 2875.
