Scott Thomas & Hoskins Desire Playhouse, 27 OctDate: 26 July 2005
As previously tipped (See The Goss, 5 Apr 2005), Whatsonstage.com Award winner Kristin Scott Thomas (pictured) will return to the West End to star in a revival of Luigi Pirandello’s 1936 play As You Desire Me. The production will open on 27 October 2005 (previews from 21 October) at the Playhouse Theatre, the scene of her last triumphant West End turn in 2003’s Three Sisters.
For As You Desire Me - in a version written by Hugh Whitemore and directed by former Almeida artistic director Jonathan Kent - Scott Thomas will be joined in the cast by Margaret Tyzack and, making a rare stage appearance, Bob Hoskins (See The Goss, 19 Apr 2005). In the play, a German writer, his mistress and sexually ambiguous daughter indulge in post-war decadence.
Scott Thomas won last year’s Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Best Actress prize for the role of Masha in Michael Blakemore’s production of Three Sisters, which marked a rather belated West End debut for the British actress, who now resides mainly in Paris. Internationally, Scott Thomas is best known for her work in films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, The English Patient, Angels and Insects, Bitter Moon, The Horse Whisperer and Gosford Park.
Hoskins has become internationally famous for his screen roles in the likes of The Long Good Friday, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Hook. Tyzack is a stage stalwart who’s recent appearances include His Girl Friday at the National and Auntie and Me in the West End.
A prolific novelist and short story writer, Pirandello turned to playwriting late in his career. The Italian has become best known to British theatregoers for plays like Six Characters in Search of an Author, The Rules of the Game, Absolutely! (perhaps) (revived by Franco Zeffirelli in the West End in 2003) and Henry IV (which starred Kent’s former joint artistic director Ian McDiarmid at the Donmar Warehouse last year).
As You Desire Me will be designed by Paul Brown, one of Kent’s frequent collaborators at the Almeida. It’s presented in the West End by Paul Elliott and Duncan Weldon for Triumph Entertainment. Currently at the Playhouse, the stage adaptation of The Postman Always Rings Twice, starring Charlotte Emmerson and Hollywood’s Val Kilmer, has extended its limited season until 10 September (See News, 18 Jul 2005).
