Opening: Peter Gill Double, Railway Children & GirlDate: 21 March 2005
Amongst the major shows opening in London this bank holiday week are:
OPENING WEDNESDAY, 23 March 2005 (preview 22 March), Lovely Evening and In the Blue, (pictured) a Peter Gill double bill, is presented at Theatre 503 (formerly the Latchmere) in Battersea, south London. Actor Daniel Evans makes his directorial debut with these two plays which have never been performed together. Gill’s other work includes Cardiff East, Certain Young Men and The York Realist (Royal Court and West End). Lovely Evening and In the Blue are part of the Young Vic’s Direct Action season. Their limited run continues until 3 April 2005.
ALSO ON WEDNESDAY, Nottingham Playhouse’s production of The Railway Children steams into the Peacock Theatre. E Nesbitt’s much-loved children’s book is adapted for the stage by Mary Elliott Nelson and directed by Andrew Breakwell. The production features live music and an old-fashioned railway station set - with waving flags, blowing whistles and a full-size steam engine. It continues in repertory until 10 April 2005.

OPENING THURSDAY, 24 March 2005 (preview 23 March 2005), The Girl with Red Hair transfers to north London’s Hampstead Theatre. Co-produced by the Bush Theatre and the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh where it premiered last month (See News, 3 Mar 2005), the play is written by Scottish playwright Sharman Macdonald, whose first play, When I Was a Girl I used to Scream and Shout, premiered at the Bush in 1984. The Girl with Red Hair is directed by the Bush’s artistic director Mike Bradwell. In it, three generations in a small town in west Scotland are all profoundly affected by the death of a 17-year-old girl. The production continues until 16 April 2005.
