Producers & Crawford Scoop Variety Club PrizesDate: 6 December 2004Less than a month after opening at the West End’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane, Mel Brooks’ hit musical comedy The Producers has already scooped its first prize. At the Variety Club of Great Britain’s 52nd annual Showbusiness Awards, held last night (5 December 2004) at the London Hilton, The Producers was presented with the Musical Theatre Award, though it was the only one of the autumn’s blockbuster musicals to be singled out. Michael Crawford (pictured in costume) - who returned to the West End after an 18-year absence to star in the world premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Woman in White, which opened at the Palace Theatre in September – won the Variety Club award for Outstanding Stage Performance of the Year. The Showbusiness Awards - which also cover film, radio, television and popular music and will be televised at 9.00pm tonight (6 December 2004) on Living TV – follow the launch party last week for Whatsonstage.com’s own Theatregoers’ Choice Awards, in which The Producers and The Woman in White have received seven nominations apiece. Amongst other Whatsonstage.com Awards contentions, both shows are in the running for Best New Musical, while Crawford has been nominated for Best Supporting Performance in a Musical (click here to vote now). - by Terri Paddock Related Content |
