Barrowman Premieres Finn Elegies for Two NightsDate: 28 October 2004
Whatsonstage.com Award winner John Barrowman (pictured) will star in the British premiere of Elegies, a song cycle by Tony Award-winning Broadway composer William Finn. The production will play for two nights only at the West End’s Arts Theatre on Sundays 7 and 14 November 2004.
Barrowman – who won his Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Best Actor in a Musical Award earlier this year for Anything Goes and is now starring in Chicago - will be joined in the special performances of Elegies by West End peers Deven May (currently playing the title role in Bat Boy – The Musical), Susannah Fellowes (Mamma Mia!), Ray Shell (The Lion King, Miss Saigon) and Lauren Ward (Camelot and, on Broadway, Follies).
Premiered in spring 2003 at New York’s Lincoln Center, Elegies is billed as a celebration of life told through the power of song. The collection of 20 songs includes personal tributes to friends and family Finn has loved and lost over the years. Finn’s other musical credits include A New Brain and Falsettos, which had a run at the West End’s Albery Theatre in 1987.
The London production is directed by Jamie Lloyd, who directed the British premiere of Finn’s Falsettoland at the Edinburgh Festival. Also on the creative team are musical director Nathan Martin, designer Jason Southgate and lighting designer Oliver Fenwick.
