Suchet Revives Rattigan’s Man & Boy on UK Tour

Date: 11 August 2004

David Suchet (pictured) will return to the stage to star in the first major revival of Terence Rattigan’s 1963 play, Man and Boy. The production, directed by actress-turned-director Maria Aitken, opens on 22 September 2004 at Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, where it continues until 2 October, before touring to eight further venues up to 27 November.

Set in the 1930s, Man and Boy finds Suchet playing Gregor Antonescu, a powerful financier who visits his estranged son, Basil, at his Greenwich Village apartment in an attempt to extricate himself from the most catastrophic disaster of his career. After newspaper headlines report that the FBI are looking for Gregor, one by one his wife and associates desert him. Only his son refuses to leave.

Suchet is well known to TV fans for his portrayal of Agatha Christie's Inspector Poirot. His film credits include A Perfect Murder and Executive Decision. Suchet’s last major UK stage role was playing Salieri in Peter Hall’s revival of Amadeus, which ran at the West End’s Old Vic before transferring to Broadway. His other stage credits include Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Oleanna.

In the seven-strong Man and Boy cast, Suchet is joined by David Yelland (Henry IV, Life x 3, Lady Windermere’s Fan), Colin Stinton (Art, The Graduate, Guys and Dolls), Ben Silverstone (The Age of Consent), Fritha Goodey, Will Huggins and Jennifer Lee Jellicorse.

Man and Boy is designed by Simon Higlett, with lighting by Mick Hughes and sound and music by Howard Davidson. It’s presented by Michael Whitehall and the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre. Following Guildford, the production visits Cambridge, Cork, Bath, Malvern, Brighton, Plymouth, Oxford and Richmond.
