Mitchell Pays The Price on Tour, Horne Is Revisited

Two West End plays – Sean Holmes’ revival of Arthur Miller’s 1968 modern classic The Price, starring Warren Mitchell (pictured), and Round the Horne...Revisited, a tribute to the classic radio serial - will both launch extensive UK tours in September.

The Price opens on 1 September 2004 at Cambridge Arts Theatre before continuing, until 13 November, to Bath, Malvern, Brighton, Milton Keynes, Oxford, Edinburgh, Guildford, Stoke, Coventry and Bradford. First seen at north London’s Tricycle Theatre in 2002, Holmes’ acclaimed production was revived for an extended season at the West End’s Apollo Theatre in autumn 2003.

From the original cast, Mitchell (best known as the objectionable Alf Garnett in TV's long-running Till Death Do Us Part) and Larry Lamb (Art, Prisoner’s Dilemma) will reprise their roles for the tour, when they’ll be joined by Brian Protheroe and Nancy Crane.

Solomon (Mitchell) is a 90-year-old furniture dealer looking for a bargain. He engages his clients by forcing them into long-winded, philosophical discussions. When he finds himself in the middle of an uneasy reunion between two long estranged brothers (Lamb and Protheroe), it seems he might have met his match.

Meanwhile, Round the Horne...Revisited will open on 6 September 2004 at the Bournemouth Pavilion before continuing to a dozen further venues, culminating with a special three-week Christmas season, from 7 to 23 December, at The Lowry in Salford Quays. This new touring production runs concurrently with the ongoing West End production, which opened at The Venue off Leicester Square on 22 January 2004 (previews from 12 January).

Brian Cooke, the last still living member of the original writing team of the 1960s radio comedy series, has written and adapted the new stage play based on two live radio episodes as well as previously unheard material (See News, 9 Dec 2003).

On tour, Paul Ryan, Stephen Critchlow, Stephen Boswell and Sherry Baines play the programme’s mad-cap bunch of comedians - Kenneth Williams, Kenneth Horne, Douglas Smith and Betty Marsden – who mercilessly send up the establishment. Round the Horne is directed by Michael Kingsbury and produced by Joabri Productions Ltd.

Following Bournemouth, the Round the Horne tour visits Jersey, Richmond, Cheltenham, Bromley, Plymouth, Leeds, Guildford, Southend, Newcastle, Norwich, Brighton and Salford.
