Happy Few Post Closing Notices at Gielgud, 31 Jul

We Happy Few - actress-turned-author Imogen Stubbs’ first play, directed by her husband Trevor Nunn – has posted closing notices at the West End’s Gielgud Theatre (See News, 20 May 2004). It opened on 2 July 2004 (delayed by three days due to a Tube strike, previews from 17 June) and was booking up to 13 November 2004. It will now finish on 31 July after a run of six weeks.

The play, first seen as part of the Remembrance Day Festival at the Malvern Theatre last autumn, is inspired by the true wartime history of the Osiris Players, a small group of women who came together to form an all-female troupe to take the plays of Shakespeare around a culture-starved country.

While the men are fighting Hitler and the bombs are blitzing London, these hopelessly mismatched individuals from entirely different social backgrounds set off around the country in a battered 1920s Rolls Royce on their cultural mission.

A high-profile ensemble is led by Juliet Stevenson – who was scheduled to be away on holiday for most of the month of August (See The Goss, 17 July 2004) – and also features Marcia Warren, Kate O'Mara, Patsy Palmer and Caroline Blakiston.

We Happy Few is designed by John Napier, with lighting by David Hersey. It’s produced in the West End by Bill Kenwright and Thelma Holt. No further productions have yet been announced for the Gielgud.
