Veteran Actor Peter Blythe Passes Away, Aged 69Date: 28 June 2004
Veteran stage actor Peter Blythe (pictured) passed away yesterday (Sunday 27 June 2004), aged 69. After a short illness, Blythe died at Dorset County Hospital.
A regular in London’s theatreland, the Yorkshire-born Blythe was last seen on stage last year in Nicholas Hytner’s Whatsonstage.com Award-winning Henry V, playing the Duke of Exeter opposite Adrian Lester in the title role. Over the decades, Blythe had also appeared at the National in Hamlet, King Lear, Pravda, The Government Inspector and Futurists.
In 1997, Blythe became a member of the Peter Hall Company in its much-lauded season at the Old Vic, with a repertory of The Provoked Wife, The Seagull, Waste and King Lear. He also appeared in Hall’s recent high-profile productions of Mrs Warren’s Profession with Brenda Blethyn, The Royal Family with Judi Dench as well as his partner Harriet Walter, and Amadeus with David Suchet.
Blythe’s other West End credits over the years included Humble Boy, Hay Fever, Mind Millie for Me, The Hot House, Woman in Mind, Top People, Number One, Caught in the Act, Make and Break, Sextet, The Chairman, Absurd Person Singular, Return to AJ Raffles, Clandestine Marriage and So What About Love.
Active on screen as well as stage, Blythe’s films included The Luzhin Defense, Carrington, ID, The Bridge, Passion and Paradise, Anno Domini, Arthur the King, Alfred the Great and Kaleidoscope. Amongst his many TV credits were The Alan Clark Diaries, The Falklands Play, Sword of Honour, Devil’s Advocate, Only Fools and Horses, Foyle’s War, Dalziel and Pascoe, Rumpole of the Bailey and Love on a Branch Line.
Peter Blythe was born on 14 September 1934. He is survived by Walter, last seen herself in the West End earlier this year in Dinner, and a daughter.
